Small, nice things
:: Our school holidays finished and we're back into the usual routines. It was a holiday of great action and inactivity in just the right amounts. Now I know we're back as I've already tackled the first week of uniform ironing. We're in gingham territory now.
:: This week we took a trip to YSP where we saw the KAWS sculptures. It was a beautiful day. I found them intriguing. LittleR loved to imitate their poses!
:: My camellia is in flower again. Just beautiful.
:: Carrot cake muffins complete with icing. No nuts (but the biggest girl still doesn't like these!). No sultanas/currants/raisins (my nemesis). Yum.
:: New book, new obsession.
:: Our living room has been decorated. We've moved some of the toys out and rearranged them in other areas of the house, We chose a warm pewter grey for the wall colour. It's such a huge change from before. The room seems so much bigger, this is likely to be the lack of toys! I'm in love with the curtains. We're now looking out for some large prints to go on the wall above the sofa...it's not 'finished' but I'm good at works in progress.
:: In tidying up for the living room to be decorated I went through a large number of photos. I had to do a double take on one. It turns out my youngest girl is the image of my brother at the same age. They pose for a picture in the same way. At that moment I really wished she could have met him. It was lovely and very surprising all at once.
:: Can you believe it snowed yesterday and we're due a light dusting overnight. Goodness me Spring it's nearly May!! Plus travel chaos tomorrow.
:: Still at least the tulips are coming.

These days...

So I hadn’t intended to take such a long time to blog again. Life happened as it usually does but this time it was mainly good things. And spring has definitely arrived!
:: We had a superb few days in Whitby and surrounds over
half term. Highlights included fish and chips and ice cream. LittleR decided to
take a fully clothed (including her coat), impromptu dip in the sea. Oh how we
laughed. Not. But we did eventually once she was dry again and I’d gotten over
dragging a screaming 3 year old up about one billion steps!
:: Actually she did look hilarious. Bone dry on the back and
soaking wet on the front. When we took off her clothes she was covered in
gritty sand on the front but nothing on the back!! After a quick hose down in
the bath (her) and an ice cream (all of us) all was well with the world.
:: We’ve worked on the garden. The daffs are out and the
grass has had its’ first cut. I fall back in love with being outside again in spring. We’ve
had the front garden ‘remodelled’. Basically some men show up and cleared the bed, dug up a load of bamboo, a huge euphorbia and anoth massive shrub, took the rubbish away and dumped tonnes of top soil down. On closer inspection
they’d left the difficult bit (the 2 shrub stumps) so the ABO and I took 5 hours
(mostly him) digging and sawing them
out. Then yesterday we lugged them into the car and off to the tip. Now comes
the fun bit…replanting. I’ve fallen prey to child pressure (similar to peer pressure but with added whining occasionally in stereo) and added a plum
tree to the new forsythia (nearly out), the magnolia (buds!!) and the hydrangea
(currently just some sticks but I live in hope).
:: This has actually meant I’ve legitimately been able to
break out a new note book for the front garden exploits. I do love a good
notebook. And a good garden diary.
:: I’ve enlisted my dad’s help on providing he summer
bedding. He has 2 greenhouses (!) and has sown seeds a plenty for both our
gardens….mostly petunias and geraniums I think.
:: The patio has been cleaned. The ABO did it himself last
year but we had a professional do it this year and the difference is
noticeable. The table is back out and the barbecue in place. Just waiting for a
day with no rain and we’ll be back cooking (at least) outside again.
:: We’ve actually had lots of time together recently as the
ABO has been on a month off for March. Not so good for the school holidays and
having a family break but good for us. We enlisted the help of babysitters and went
to see Rudimental (who were amazing!!) and Paddy McGuiness. We’ve done ‘jobs’
that are easier without bored children complaining. We’ve stayed up too late
watching rubbish on TV. It’s been a good month.
:: We've also had a wonderful child free night away that we’d had to
reschedule from last year when LittleR was so poorly. Good food and good
company in beautiful surroundings near Helmsley. The girls stayed with their
grandparents having too many treats and staying up too late on a school night!
:: I finally made the embroidery/applique for my friend’s
little girl who was a year old at the end of February. Ever critical, it’s a little wonky but was
made with love. Plus it’s up in her room so they must like it.
:: This time of year makes me want to get things sorted (I
have another push in September too – my life runs on the academic calendar). We have a small expedit unit that hides many (not
all – my children have far too many toys) of the girls’ toys and books downstairs.
My plan, under the cloak of darkness, is to clear through this and gain back
some semblance of order. We’re having the
living room decorated in mid April (should’ve been done for now but the
decorator was unwell) and some more will be going then! I’m sure they’ll get
over it...I’ve also been through their clothes and made a note of things that
need replacing through wear or growth. I’ve been through my clothes but not
much needed to go there! The major reordering plan for me is to move my craft
stuff into one place (it’s currently in 3 small places). This needs a bit of thinking about…
:: I rose to Penny’s challenge in February for new dishes
and managed two new to me recipes. Both were from Mary Berry’s Cookery course.
I made fish pie and used a lamb shank. I altered the fish pie to use only
unsmoked fish as I’m the only fan of
smoked fish here and left out the hard boiled eggs. For the lamb I followed the
recipe slavishly and it was delicious. I’ll do both of those again! Next up
will be some things that freeze easily as the ABO is on lates and needs easily
portable and reheatable dishes. March was a rerun of the same things really.
Must try harder in April.
:: I’m also planning some new craft things which if I get
round to them will share here. I’ve got a list (of course) and I’m ready to
crack on. Skirts first I think. As for the scarf for the ABO – it’s yet to be finished but there’s
always next winter!
:: I'm back at work for a day today and then the rest of the week is normal life. The ABO resumes work on Friday just as the school holidays start here in Leeds (ours are fixed for the first 2 weeks in April) so next week BigR is off school, having a 'Daddy and me day' and going to York on the train. I've a surprise planned for the girls later in the week too...more soon...
:: Also the ducks are back on the pond at work. Expect more updates.

That difficult bit in the middle
I keep thinking I should blog. I have a list of bloggable
things. Then an inertia overtakes me and I don’t. I’ve been reading blogs but I
haven’t been commenting as much as I would like either (again)….meaning I will catch
up with it but I’m fighting a losing battle on what seems like all fronts at
the moment. It’s a busy time at the moment work is busy (this is a good thing,
I really don’t like being idle) and of course there’s life stuff to keep up
with.
LittlestR has relapsed so it’s been a bit of a fraught time.
We’re back on track again (I hope), for now, but I can’t help thinking (and
knowing) this is only the beginning. This is not helpful to the getting yourself
out of the inertia. But enough of this navel gazing tedium. I’m boring myself with
my woe is me excuses…
So of course it’s not all doom and gloom. There have been
plenty of bright moments over the last 40 odd days…here of just some of them.
Day 38 – We took advantage of the enforced INSET day at the
start of half term and went to Yorkshire Wildlife Park. It’s a great day out
and ticks all our boxes. It’s not a too arduous journey, there’s plenty to see
(and lots of new things too), plenty of places to have a picnic, you’re outside
walking round so getting some fresh air and there’s an ice cream stop. Since we
last visited they’ve taken in some more polar bears.
Day 42 – Half term passed in a blur really. I took a day off
work and spent it day with BigR. As a surprise I booked into our local pottery painting
café. We had great fun working on our items. BigR painted a plate (she drew
some dolphins) and I painted a pen pot and then we both did a Christmas
decoration. (They’re now adorning the tree…more on that later….) In my mind's eye there would be seed pods on a mottled background. Next time I';ll sue a finer brush. The pot now sits atop our microwave.
Day 45 – Madly I let BigR choose a little gift in The Works.
She chose a fairy door….and so her fairy, Verbena, was born. Verbena visited every
day for 4 days until she ran out of fairy dust (read I just couldn’t think of anything
else to say in response to the weight of pictures and offerings left at the
door). She’s due to make a comeback soon.
Day 46- I couldn't leave these strawberries in the shop. They were destined to become more jam. And as Sarah pointed out on Instagram Lancashire grown to Yorkshire made.
Day 53 – The weather was so poor we stayed at home and
watched a new film…The Jungle Book. We had popcorn. It was great fun.
Day 59 – BigR once again showed her creative side and made a
Hama Bead Pudsey Bear. I failed a little on my part by sticking the ironing paper
to the creation. Iron too hot? Not concentrating? Still I redeemed myself with
a sponge cake.
I also admired my mittens that my very talented friend Sarah made me. They combined well with the floor of the Leeds General Infirmary.
I also admired my mittens that my very talented friend Sarah made me. They combined well with the floor of the Leeds General Infirmary.
Day 62 – Enthused by watching Rick Stein eating moussaka I
made us one (to be eaten the next day). I started it at 7pm one night when the
girls had gone to bed. Around 8pm I wondered why I thought it was a good idea
as there were pots and trays everywhere and my béchamel wasn’t thickening. When
I’d finished though and I’d cleared up I was really pleased. There’s something I
love about pottering around in the kitchen making something to have for another
day and being that organised! I’ve spent a lot of time slumped in front of the
TV lately, a bit too tired to be bothered doing anything, so this really helped
with that inertia fug. Plus when we ate it, it was delicious.
Day 63 – Finally I made the arms for the knitted dolls I’m
(still) making. Eventually they’ll be two dolls. Eventually.
I really rather liked how the French flags reflected in my
wine and almost matched my knitting.
Day 70 – Sometimes I really love my job. Today was one of those
days. I was assessing a session where the students were teaching. I’ve learned
so many things from these sessions over the years. Today I learnt (amongst
other things) how to make an origami tulip. Brilliant.
Day 74 – The weather was atrocious and the ABO is working
the next few weekends so we both ventured into the loft to get the Christmas
decorations out. The tree is now up…(perhaps a little early for some) and
adorned in a way only a 6 year old and almost 3 year old want to decorate! I added
the decorations we made at the pottery painting place and am working on moving
some of the baubles around…so we have them a bit more evenly distributed.
Day 75 - I'd seen the recipe for these Red Velvet Snowflakes in a magazine and in my carefully planned world I'd prepared and chilled the dough. I was a little skeptical about how this would go as the dough was supremely sticky. Anyway, in my head this was going to be a joyous, child friendly baking activity. Cut to an hour later where I'd used another 50-100g of flour so I could roll the dough out and spent the majority of that time trying to stop two small children fighting or burning themselves whilst covered in flour - we were finally were ready to cut the cookies. Things I have learnt, only cook with one child at a time. Never expect it is easy to roll anything out between two sheets of baking paper. Red Velvet snowflakes are fine as stocking, snowmen and tress and stars. Anyway they taste nice even if I couldn't be bothered to ice them after all that shenanigans!

So with a background of illness combined with busyness we’ve
had some really good moments. I’m planning to visit and comment on everyone’s
blogs this week. I hope you’ll bear with me.

Festivities and such like
I've
felt a little lacklustre the last week or so, poor sleep and the start of a
cold (which fortunately didn't materialise into anything more) coupled with my
busiest teaching time and other work pressures has meant I've not been able to
spend more time at the computer. I've been reading your blogs on my phone but it’s
a real pain to comment via my phone so I've felt more absent. And of course
there’s that thing about getting out of the habit. I’m hoping blogging is like riding
a bike in that respect.
So…here
we go. In no particular order.
:: I’m
feeling Christmassy. Is that a word? Perhaps festive is more accurate. I think
it’s having 2 small children that has done it to me. And the fact that I’ll be finished
with work from next Weds until well into the New Year. We've been counting
sleeps until Father Christmas makes his visits. This year we also all have an advent calendar thanks to Grandma and Grandad. Typically the big one has a Frozen one! There's nothing that has missed the marketing drive!
:: The
tree went up just prior to the 1st December – far too early for my
liking but it was one way to bribe, ahem, reward a small child for staying in bed past 6am! The ABO was on earlies so there I was at 5am sticking the branches in.
:: I have been able to buy some new decorations…mostly child choices but this enamelled tree is one of my favourites. It’s made by a local artist, Shelley Lodge. We have a picture of the four seasons she’s done too.

:: We've made some gingerbread biscuits…in festive shapes. I like the Christmas trees….BigR
likes the snowmen. LittleR just likes to eat them! Next stop mince pies...only the ABO likes them so we'll have to make some jam tarts too.
:: The
girls have visited Father Christmas as the school fair last week. BigR wasn't
entirely convinced. Not that she’s not a believer, she most definitely is, but
Father Christmas wasn't wearing his big black boots and so there was obviously an
imposter there. We decided it must be an elf pretending as the real FC is far
too busy at the moment. LittleR was ‘ho ho ho’-ing on repeat.
:: I've
been trying to make some decorations for the house/tree/gifts. I've sewn some
buttons on some felt and that’s as far as this bag of goodies has gone. The ABO
is on lates and then away with work next week so I’m hoping to crack on with it…or
wait until Christmas 2015. If I make anything I’ll share it here.
:: Most
of our present buying is done. We’re a very small family so it’s quite an easy
task. Plus I couldn't take the bun fight that toy shops would be. We won’t be travelling
the length and breadth of the country at this time of year so we’re focussing
on it just being the 4 of us. My parents (G&G) are visiting this weekend
and Grandad (G- the ABO’s Dad) is coming just before Christmas. The ABO goes
back to work on Boxing day. There’s really only the food purchases to make now and
they’re the ones I like the best (especially choosing the ABO a chocolate treat….maybe
Hotel Chocolat this year?). I just have
one more gift to buy for a friend. I’ve even been able to be smug and make the
last posting for New Zealand.
:: Having said that I went to the supermarket on Black Friday (this was a new one on me!!) and was stunned to see police sorting out the queue. Who wants a big TV/ child's wendyhouse or a scooter that much you could be trampled in a crush?
:: We
took the girls to the Thackray Medical Museum. You can go back as many times as
you like through the year on one entry price. We've been a few times but there’s
always a new button to press or thing to see. There’s a great exhibition of how
Leeds was in the mid 19th Century. Including the smells: fascinating and horrific.
:: I've
had my hair cut. This might not seem like an event but from having almost waist
length hair it's now just on the shoulder. I did tell the hairdresser (who I've
known for over 10 years) to cut it all off but he didn't go quite that far. My
very fine hair now feels thick again. I should’ve cut it ages ago.
:: We've
been rearranging some storage areas. We’ve gotten rid of our CD cabinets and put
the CDs into wallets. Most of our music is on the computer and can be played
wirelessly through phones/ipad/ the tv(so I’m told!) so we still have the
originals but they’re not on show anymore. This area has been replaced with a
book case for my ever growing cookbook (and burgeoning craft book) collection. And yes I've asked for two
for Christmas.
:: I ‘need’
a new phone. I had a middle class disaster and dropped my phone onto the
dishwasher and the screen now has a big crack in it. It’s been like that for
over a month now but I am due an upgrade. Shall we see if it
takes me as long to replace my phone as it did to get my hair cut?!
:: I treated
myself to a solo breakfast in town. I had a paper to mark for work and could do
that and eat so I did. It was very yum. (Yes I had started before I thought to take a pic!!)
:: BigR has been learning her lines for the reception school concert. She knows everyone else's parts too. A girl after my own heart. I was pleased that I only had to provide Christmas clothes (I did have to ask for clarification!) and a Santa hat as a costume. Apparently there are lots of sheep. My mind boggles.
:: I met a friend, who I used to work with, for coffee. She's getting married next year. That's just such fabulous news.

:: I have been loving the sky at various times.
We've had plenty of rain and dreich weather but some beautiful, cold, clear
crisp days.
:: Two friends are almost back from maternity leave. They're doing 'keeping in touch' days until January. I've really missed them and their work camaraderie over the last year.
:: There
are still roses flowering in the garden. Although we had a 5 minute snow
flurry today so not for much longer.
:: I'm looking forward to catching up with everyone's happenings and seeing everyone's news in the run up to the end of 2014,

Holidays, Praise and Colour (in various guises) :: days 87-97
Only a few days of this challenge left. I'm still amazed I kept it up...it also means that it's nearly my birthday, which means cake. Yum. I'm trying to decide what I want. The ABO offered to make a lemon tart but as I'm the only one who likes it (and there are limits with lemon tart even on your birthday) maybe we'll have something else, a Mary Berry Victoria sponge perhaps as its very family friendly. BigR is currently obsessed with how old everyone is and then telling anyone who'll listen. And that Mummy is older than Daddy.
Anyway...here are the last 10 days. I'm hoping to keep this up but following Gillian's example of a weekly round up of happiness.
I will, also, get around to commenting on everyone's blogposts...thank you for reading mine here.
Day 87
Anyway...here are the last 10 days. I'm hoping to keep this up but following Gillian's example of a weekly round up of happiness.
I will, also, get around to commenting on everyone's blogposts...thank you for reading mine here.
Day 87
:: A Saturday morning trip into Leeds with enough time for a
coffee and to leave before the busyness descends
Day 88
:: Packing for our midweek break. I am always amazed at how much
is required by two small people for 4 days!
:: Taking control of the nursery bear's holiday with us...
Day 89
:: Seeing months of preparation turn into an well organised and
thought provoking conference….Before running from the building to go on our
hollibobs.
:: Picking up pine cones from the forest floor.
:: BigR and LittleR sharing a room for the first time.
Day 90
:: My first ride on a bike in 25 years. Hilarious!
:: Holiday treat - having a pedicure. It’s not something I get
done very often. I paint my own toenails (usually the same colour all summer)
but a foot massage and a professional polish is a real treat.
Day 91
:: Taking both the Rs swimming. Little R loving being able to
stand up in the water!
:: Cupcake decorating by BigR.
Day 92
:: Pottery painting by BigR
:: The first BBQ of the summer. BBQ always seem like a good idea
but then seemingly (in our house) take ages and encourages flies and wasps to
appear like magic. This time we got it right…cook it outside and eat it inside!
:: Goose and duck feeding overlooking the lake.
Day 93
:: Homeward bound but not until after another dip in the pool
:: The relief of your own bed after being away (even if the bed
was very comfy!).
Day 94
:: The excitement by the girls as Grandma and Grandad arrived.
:: A(lmost) nite off. It’s amazing how only putting one child to
bed frees up your evening.
:: A perfectly cooked steak with peppercorn sauce.
Day 95
:: An early night with a good book in preparation for a week of
4.20am wake ups
Day 96
:: The ducklings again. They’re much bigger!
:: Praise after well received teaching.
:: Coming to the end of a really well written book.
Day 97
:: Conference feet. The coffee was only fair.
:: Beautiful roses in my garden.

Long days and some rain :: days 57 - 68

Well the days and weeks seem to be slipping by…I’m already more than halfway through my 101 days challenge and we’re in June already. There’s a definite rhythm to my happinesses with lots of food being mentioned.
Day 57 – raindrops on poppies. One of the places I work at
has amazing planting down the side of one building.
(Just today I noticed some peonies tightly in bud…I’m
looking forward to seeing those flower.)
Day 58 – I worked from home today on some writing I needed
to do. I’m actually in an open plan office which make sit really hard to do any
serious concentrating. This is unusual for academia, I was kind of hoping to be
in my ivory tower once I’d gotten to this point in my career but alas no, I’m
in a room with 50 others!! It’s difficult as I’m always half listening to everyone
else’s conversations.
My Christmas cactus has decided to flower…hurrah…only it’s
not Christmas. Must be very confused…still it looks lovely! (I have now dusted the plant!!)
Day 59 – This was the start of my 4 days of solo parenting.
The ABO was on earlies and long earlies at that. He’d be back for bedtime but
as the bank holiday stretched out in front of me…with an extra day of University
and therefore nursery closure on Tuesday and heavy rain forecast I wasn’t sure
what we would do!! As it happens on Saturday I made popcorn whilst LittleR was napping
and we then all watched ‘Frozen’ whilst the rain poured down! It was fun.
Day 60 – I knew that the weekend would be difficult but I didn't
bank on BigR and I having a grump at the same time. I was in a poor mood to
start with, it was raining and I just couldn't be bothered with any whining. We
met my friend at a garden centre for a coffee but left very quickly due to moaning.
Hmmm. If you say you’re going to leave if the moaning doesn't stop I guess you
have to follow through…not very well thought out on my part really!
Still the moaning then stopped and we had a much better day.
We picked some flowers from the garden and the girls were super pleased when Daddy
came home rushing to the door as he pulled up in the car.
Day 61 – We popped out in the morning to buy some ribbon for
the ballet cardigan my friend is making for BigR, she is beyond excited that
she’ll be able to wear it soon.
In the afternoon we went to visit another friend who had a
baby about a fortnight ago (very briefly!). She’s doing so well and adjusting
to the massive change in her life. It made me realise how big my two are!!
Day 62 – It’s a constant effort not to fall into a food rut
and turn around the same meals. It’s easy if everyone eats them but it can be a
little dull. I saw some lamb mince on the shelf and my first thought was
Shepherd’s pie then I decided on lamb burgers. The ABO and I had them for tea
with extras for lunch the day after. I was going to make some coleslaw but time
escaped me so I just bought some. They were delicious with some rosemary from
the garden.
Loving the look on BigR’s face when she gets to wear
her new pyjamas.
Day 63 – Hosting the first seminar for work. It’s a simple thing
really but I’d built it up and up into something quite unnecessary. I needed to
introduce the speaker, thank them and ‘control’ the questions. It went well and
I breathed a sigh of relief.
Day 64 – Another work related happiness…I had a really good
meeting and will be able to push forward a research project for the future with
the support of my two workplaces and a third party.
Day 65 – I worked at home again but this time took the girls
to nursery so the ABO could also do some study. After a productive morning, we went for lunch together to here. It was delicious.
Day 66 - We had a lovely trip to Harlow Carr using our
membership. The gardens are so beautiful year round but it’s fantastic to see
what they’ve done with their planting. They have so much colour…it’s a constant
battle for me that everything comes at once and then I have periods of ‘quiet’
before the next set of plants come into flower…need to work on this. There wasn't
even too much moaning about walking!
Day 67 – *fanfares*…I've finished the knitted dog. I am so
pleased with it!!It looks remarkably like the picture. I think the body is a little
under-stuffed at the neck but that makes him (it’s a boy dog I think) an individual.

Small happinesses
It’s been a tiring day. Up at 4am
with a child who had ‘finished their sleep’. I managed to convince her to go back
to sleep (until 5.30am) but sadly I then just laid there, wide awake, waiting
for her to get up again and for the morning to start (I used the time
productively and got on with my book!). This evening could only be described as
a parenting fail. Bedtime was a bit (ha!) of a disaster and she finally fell
asleep (ran out of excuses?) around 8.30pm. So after a pretty exhausting day
which included lots of walking in the rain, rushing and the horrors of ‘networking’
(shudder) I’m going to focus on things that have given me a little lift over
the last week.
:: A new butter dish. Reduced in Waitrose I couldn’t resist it. I’ve coveted an Orla Kiely one but this one will do just as well in the interim...until my birthday. Actually can you ever have too many dishes? I could always use two butter dishes, one for unsalted and salted butter each. Easy.
:: Daffodils. I’ve barely been
able to walk past the flowers in the supermarket. They cheer up the kitchen on
a grey morning or on a sunny morning.
:: Just below the daffs...the
dishwasher. Also a source of immense joy (sigh).
:: One of our cacti is flowering.
The buds open and close through the day and are longlasting. There are at least
4 buds on this one so we’ll see if they all open.
:: Lemon and lime curd – I cheated
and used this recipe (halved) and the microwave. It’s zesty and sharp and
delicious on plastic white bread!
:: Train travel with a coffee
(black Americano) and a magazine. In this case the journey was short (25
minutes) to York for work. But that didn’t stop my purchases
:: Enjoying my job. Attending a
conference. I don’t like ‘networking’. I find it hard and I’m not very good at
it but I do like learning and listening to inspirational people and that’s what
was good today. That and the coffee at the venue.
:: Walking through Leeds and York
at opposite ends of the day, The weather was grey andA rainy. In fact it only
seemed to rain when I needed to walk today! But it was time to think and
photograph (poorly I know with my phone) ...before heading home.
:: Making lists and plans. A trip
to Ikea is needed (we need a step stool...I have a bruise on my head and a
broken pyrex bowl to prove it). Just how many totally necessary items will fall
into my basket on the way round? I like the look of the Brakig collection....
:: Rev – possibly the funniest
show on TV. As ever Olivia Colman is superb!
